Direct Dimensions and DPI Announce AFI 5000 Partnership

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JANUARY 31, 2007

WILMINGTON, MA, January 31, 2007.  Direct Dimensions, Inc. (DDI), a leading 3D measurement product sales and service organization, and Dimensional Photonics International, Inc. (DPI), a leading producer of high performance digital shape scanners, have formed a sales & support partnership around DPI’s AFI 5000 product line. Maryland-based DDI was established in 1995 by Michael Raphael, a recognized expert in digital shape scanning who has been a keynote speaker at numerous 3D scanning conferences in North America and around the world. Michael Raphael explains: “Over the years, DDI has undertaken and successfully completed thousands of challenging 3D applications for leading industrial manufacturing and engineering firms, including companies in aerospace, automotive and power generation industries. Our 3D imaging technologies (hardware, software and unique processes) allow us to model complex objects down to the last intricate detail. The partnership with DPI adds tremendously to our capabilities."

“DPI is very pleased to have a distribution partner with DDI’s success as a shape scanning service bureau,” says Olaf N. Krohg, Chairman and CEO of DPI.  “We look forward to a close, long-term relationship and are particularly interested in pursuing automation opportunities based on our AFI 5000 family of products.”

According to Michael Raphael, “DPI digital shape scanning systems exhibit capabilities that are absolutely critical to DDI’s current and future customers, including the ability to scan most machined or painted parts without the use of powder spray.”  He continues, “DDI is eager to apply DPI’s technology to automated manufacturing applications such as casting and sheet metal inspection.”

DPI shape scanners are based on a proprietary technology called Accordion Fringe Interferometry (AFI) developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  AFI-based scanners create digital models (CAD) of physical objects by immersing the object in patterns of light, then recording the way the patterns reflect off of the object’s surface.
